Spain suffered their first knockout defeat since losing to France at 2006 World Cup after they went down 2-0 to Italy at Stade de France. Goals from Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pelle on either side of the half sent the Azzurri into the quarterfinals where they face Germany.
In a timid attacking display, Spain never posed any real threat to Gianluigi Buffon’s goal and suffered numerous threats to their own needing David De Gea to be on hand multiple times.
Chiellini gave Italy the lead in the 33rd minute after an Eder free kick was parried by De Gea and it rebounded to the defender who slotted past the Spain keeper with his knee.
