Facebook Bets Big On Online Gambling [Updates]

The Olympics isn’t the only big ticket ‘event’ in the U.K. anymore. In a very unusual first, Facebook has introduced a gambling app that’s presently only for users in the United Kingdom. The unusual bit about it is that users aged 18 and over can use real money to play on the app.

The Bingo & Slots Friendzy app has been developed by Gamesys, who also are one of UK’s biggest online gambling companies. They operate the popular bingo-and-slots website Jackpotjoy.com in the U.K. Gamesys also runs other non-cash casino and slot machine games on Facebook.

According to the press release from Gamesys, The Friendzy App is a series of 90 Ball Bingo and Slots games which will offer the Facebook community the opportunity to play with and win real money. There will be other payoffs as a player progresses through the game.

U.K. has been picked as a target market because of the more liberal laws, instead of the U.S. which is Facebook’s primary market but with a stricter anti-gambling stance. Julien Codorniou, Facebook’s Head of EMEA Gaming Partnerships said:

“People love playing new types of games with their friends on Facebook and real money gaming is a popular leisure activity in the UK.”

Facebook has put in place age-gating checks and geo-location technology to prevent under-age kids from accessing the app. Gamesys says it is looking to create a safe and trusted environment for the gaming experience.
