New Facebook Status Updates Can Include Movies, Books, Music & More [Updates]

Starting this week, Facebook users in the United States can share the things they are watching, reading, listening to, eating, drinking, or feeling through status updates. Yes, you could do that before, but with his new enhancement, which adopts some of the features of places like GetGlue, you can keep your friends specifically informed on what you are up to in terms of entertainment.

The feature will only be available in the US to start with, and will be rolling out over the next week. To check if you already have it, launch Facebook and click on the status box. You should see a little smiley face next to where the location and photo buttons sit. Clicking it will open a dropdown menu filled with different types of media you can add to a status update. So if you wanted to check into a movie, for example, you would simply click “Watching” and then type the name of the movie into the box that appears below the status update area.

It’s important to note that using this feature will include a link to item in your status update, so the update becomes much more visual than a regular one. The one catch to these new status updates is that every item you add in this way will also be added to the respective section on your page. So if you link to a movie, that movie’s page will be automatically added to the movie section on your Timeline. This may annoy some users, as they are essentially Liking a page without explicitly clicking the button to do so.

Facebook is quick to point out that “these updates, and the stories added to your timeline, respect the privacy settings you choose for your post.” So, as you would expect, these will be treated like any other status update in terms of privacy.

Do you like this new update? Will you use it?
