Cape Town taxi driver deserts his minibus, passengers to flee roadblock

Cape Town – A taxi driver deserted his passengers and vehicle and fled on foot to duck a police roadblock on the N2 highway in Cape Town on Thursday morning.

The minibus was towed from the scene between Jan Smuts and Raapenberg Road, where the operation took place between 07:00 and 09:30.

Traffic officers joked that runaway motorists are not at all uncommon.

In one instance, one officer said, a taxi driver jumped into a nearby canal to flee a roadblock. 

Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said while the morning operation may be an irritation for those stuck in traffic, it is the perfect time to nab those with outstanding warrants who use their cars mostly to get to work and back.

Fourteen motorists were arrested for outstanding warrants.

Drivers dressed in work uniforms and office clothes were piled into the back of a traffic services vehicle and carted off to the Wynberg Magistrates…
