Pretoria – The mother of the man shot and killed outside the Tshwane Events Centre during an ANC meeting says the man who pulled the trigger should rot in jail.
“The suspect should be imprisoned for a life term,” Magdeline Modihe said on Wednesday.
“He must spend the same amount of time in prison as Simon will spend in heaven. He should only be released when Simon returns.”
Simon Modihe was shot and killed on June 19 when the ANC was scheduled to announce Thoko Didiza as its mayoral candidate for the city of Tshwane.
While party members were inside the venue the father of two boys, aged 13 and 3, was shot twice along WF Nkomo Street.
The party leadership led by regional chairperson Kgosientso Ramokgopa and Didiza visited the Modihe family on Wednesday.
The mother said the visit helped her to deal with her grief.
“I was encouraged by their words and the fact that they came to visit. They also promised to continue supporting the family the same way they were supporting Simon,” she said.
Magdeline added that she would miss her child whom she described as a pillar of strength for the family.
“I will miss my child. He was the umbrella of the family. He shielded us. Anything that happened, he was there. He was able to mediate and advise accordingly,” she said.
Ramokgopa said the leadership of the party would continue to work to restore order and stabilise the region following the violent protests. He said their visit to the family was to build relations.
