Recover Facebook With A Little Help From Your Friends [News]

Facebook is constantly bringing something new to their service, and this one is interesting. It is not the typical Facebook story about some new change to the news feed or a completely new looking profile, but rather, this is a interesting way to recover your Facebook account in the unfortunate event that it becomes the target of an evil password stealing hacker. All you need to get by this situation is a little help from your friends.

The new Facebook feature, called ‘Trusted Friends‘ allows you to appoint three to five friends on Facebook to act as your account¬†representatives. If somehow you get locked out your account, and you can’t access email to do a normal password reset, Facebook will send a code to your three to five ‘Trusted Friends” and you must enter that code to reset your account. Seems to me the chances of actually getting locked out of your Facebook and email at the same time are pretty low, but it’s nice to have the option.

The glaring drawback is the amount of time it would take to have the codes sent to your friends, have them get the codes to you and then enter the code. If you are hacked you want to fix the situation as quickly as possible. Still, it’s better than being locked out forever.

The feature is not available to everyone yet. To set it up or check if you have it, go to Account then Account Settings and lastly click Trusted Friends – if it’s there.

What do you think of this new feature?  Do you trust anyone enough with your Facebook codes?
