Pretoria – The University of Pretoria council is reported to have finally decided that English will become the only medium of instruction at the institution of higher learning.
According to Luvuyo Menzies, an SRC representative and member of the UP Council, the body sat on Wednesday and adopted the one medium language policy which makes English the only language of instruction at the university, as per the demand of #AfrikaansMustFall.
This will take effect from 2017 for all new enrolment.
Existing students, where demographics allow, will be given the minimum completion time of their degrees to finish their studies in Afrikaans.
Menzies said this was a victory for the students of the University of Pretoria and Africa at large.
“It is also only a step towards the decolonisation of South Africa and Africa at large,” he said.
